First International Bout — One to Remember

Ever since I was a child, I remember watching sports on television and noticing that the United States seemed to offer endless opportunities for athletes. The uniforms were sharp, the athletes were outfitted from head to toe, and they were top of the charts. As I grew older, I came to understand that much of this came down to funding, resources, and access. At the same time, I developed an appreciation for the athletes who achieved success without those advantages.

Coming from humble beginnings myself, the opportunity to compete in the United States was one I wasn’t going to pass up. What I didn’t realize was just how memorable the experience would be.

I approached it like any other fight not truly knowing what I was about to participate in. The moment I stepped inside though, it was clear this was something different. The two-story venue featured an upper level overlooking the ring, while cameras captured the action from every angle. Large screens displayed live footage and instant replays throughout the event, creating an atmosphere that felt far beyond anything I had experienced before.

The highlight of the evening was the fighter introductions. Before the opening bell, all competitors were brought to the ring for the welcome ceremony and led in by bagpipers. Part of me felt like I was participating in a mini Olympic; another part felt like I had stepped onto a professional fight card. It was an unforgettable experience and one that made the occasion feel truly special.

Of course, the night became even more memorable when I delivered a strong performance, earned the victory, and captured my first belt.

The energy of the crowd added another layer to the experience. Fans cheered wildly as fighters landed clean shots, the tension built as decisions were announced, and spectators even stopped to take photos with me and my belt after the fight. The event largely featured Team Ireland versus Team USA, with a handful of Canadians filling out the card, making the international atmosphere even more exciting.

My first international bout exceeded every expectation I had. It provided a glimpse into what is possible in this sport and left me eager for more opportunities to compete on the international stage. If this experience was any indication, I hope it is only the beginning.
